Anti-inflammatory medicaments comprise a sterol glycoside or ester thereof, and/or a spiroketal-steroid glycoside or ester thereof. Preferred active compounds include glucosides of tall oil sterols, sitosterol, ergosterol, cholesterol, 5 alpha -cholesterol, lanosterol, 24,25-dihydrolanosterol, stigmasterol and soybeansterol; the beta -D-galactoside, beta -D-maltoside, beta -D-lactoside and beta -D-cellobioside of sitosterol; and the glucoside of diosgenin, hecogenin and tigogenin. The medicaments inhibit prostaglandin synthetase. |
