and H2O vapour are absorbed from a gas using conc. H2SO4 or oleum using a column. This has a central venturi into which acid is injected and down which the gas is passed. At the base is a collection zone for the acid. The venturi is surrounded by an annular packed bed supported on a perforated plate. Acid is sprayed onto the surface of the bed and flows down through. In this way a double scrubbing action is achieved. Used for removing SO3 and H2O from exhaust gas streams. Gives good scrubbing efficiency for low pressure drop and with no droplet entrainment, without requiring a bulky installation.
