Aqs. phosphate soln. (esp. K4P2O7) is adjusted with base to pH above that of soln. itself (pref. by not 0.25 units) and treated with absorbent (pref. MgO, MgSiO3, Al2O3, attapulgus clay) for heavy metal ions, which is inert under reaction conditions. Concentration of phosphate soln. pref. is not 75, esp. not 90% of saturation concentration. Process is esp. useful for separating Fe and Cu ions from condensed Na and K phosphates. Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd can also be removed. |
