Pyritic sulphur and ash are removed from coal by (a) dissolving in a hydrogen-donor solvent at 427 degrees C for a time selected to minimise hydrogen loss and aromatisation of the solvent, sepg. the pyritic sulphur, ash and undissolved coal, and (b) heating at 315-538 degrees C for sufficient time to obtain a pure product and remove at least part of the solvent. Used in prodn. of clean solid fuel for power station or domestic use, boiler fuel, coke and materials suitable for hydrogenation to obtain turbine fuels. Short contact times, e.g. 1-5 mins., are required in (a) which with the low temps. used prevents coke formation, and gives a readily-filtered product. Hydrogen consumption is kept to a min. and recovery of solvent increased.
|
