An electric field is produced between the pipe wall and an insulated electrode penetrating the pipe wall by an H T generator whose voltage is calculated to produce a spark discharge between the electrode point and the pipe wall whenever a component passes. The current pulses produced are indicated or recorded. If an HF generator is used the number of pules recorded for one component is an inverse measure of its speed. The apparatus is reliable in the conditions obtaining inside a nuclear reactor and is suited to counting passage of fuel elements etc.
