The air operated hammer is fitted with an arresting device in form of a spiral spring coiled from square cross section wire. The ram (4) has a reduced diameter end which, during the operation of the hammer, is driven against the end of the tool (2). The housing (1) is provided with a ring-shaped groove in which are fitted an axially slidable bushing (6) and an elastic buffer ring (8). Inside the bushing is a spiral spring (7) acting as the arresting element for the reduced diameter end of the ram.
