The machine deposits items of limited length, typically cut from endless strip or hose etc. of elastomer (or plastomer) material, having a conveyor delivering the items in the lengthwise direction and a mechanism depositing them separately. A table with a transverse transporter (6) is movable below a transfer mechanism (8) at the discharge end of the conveyor (1) for a distance (a) in the direction of the latter, so as to receive the items. Its speed is kept nearly equal to that of the conveyor. When it has covered this distance it is moved, with the item (18) on it, in the transverse direction into a discharge position. In this position, the transverse transporter extends over a receiving surface in a storage unit. Controls ensure that on the return journey from the discharge position the speed of the table, and of the transporter on it in the opposite direction, are equal.
