The semiconductor memory has a number of memory cells arranged in matrix form in one semiconductor chip for storing data. A selecting circuit is coupled to the memory cells for selecting some of the memory cells at a time in response to address signals for reading out a predetermined set of data. The data has check bits from the selected memory cells. An error correcting code circuit formed in the semiconductor chip and coupled to the selecting circuit receives the predetermined set of data having check bits from the selecting circuit. The selected memory cells, delivers the data having check bits and are located at the semiconductor chip so as to be spaced from each other by a distance of at least one of the memory cells.
