1-(2-Thiazolinyl)-2-amino-benzimidazoles or its tautomer mers of formula (I) are novel cpds. In (I) R=H or 1-4C acyl; R1 is in posn. 5 or 6 R2R3C(OH)- or RiC(=R4)-; R2=1-3C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl-methyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl-ethyl, thienyl or phenyl; R3=1-7C alkyl and R4=1-7C alkylidene. (I) are used to disinfect surfaces as food additives, administered orally in doses of 1-300 mg/kg, administered parenterally or intranasally as drops or a spray. Pharmacological test are described. A typical product is 1-(thiazolin-2-yl)-2-amino-6-(alpha-hydroxy-alpha-n-butylbenzyl)-- benzimidazole prepd. by reaction of n-butyl lithium with the corresponding 6-benzolimidazole and hydrolysis of the prod.
