The capacitor of the ignition system is charged from a coil via a charging circuit, while being discharged via a controllable electronic switch to the ignition transformer primary. The latter secondary is connected to spark plug(s). At least a part of the charge coil of a magnetic generator has a bridging shunt in parallel, which contains a bridging switch (32). - The bridging switch becomes conductive when the voltage of the charge coil has reached a specified value. The bridging switch has a control terminal, to which is connected a control circuit (34) which is also connected to at least a part of the charge coil. This control circuit contains a control switch (34) of a threshold value type. Preferably the control switch activating voltage corresponds to the ignition operating charge voltage.
