The process involves bringing the gas into contact with a circulating scrubbing liquid. Said scrubbing liquid contains one or more calcium salts whose calcium ions bind the sulphur dioxide. Admixing the scrubbing liquid with a polybasic carboxylic acid, in particular citric acid, considerably increases the sulphur dioxide absorption rate. The appliance has a gas scrubber (2) which is supplied from a container (6) with scrubbing liquid in circulation (6, 5, 4, 2, 7). Located in the container (6) there are: an oxidation chamber (8) with air supply (12), a reaction chamber (9) with lime supply (21) and air supply (16) and a settling chamber (10). A drag conveyor (22) is provided for discharging the precipitated components. <IMAGE>
