A mine support with a floor member (10) positioned behind a free conveyor, connected to a roof member (13) overhanging the conveyor, by a telescopic swinging arm (14) also has a swinging arm (11) at the rear forming a shield from falling material. This arm is connected by swinging side plates (20) secured by an upper hinge pin (22) to the rear member (11) and a lower hinge pin (21) to the floor member. This arm (20) is swung by a cylinder (23) immediately behind, protected by a curved lower extension (20'). It is connected by a hinge pin (24) at the bottom to the floor member, and by an upper pin (22') to the arm (20). An alternative design has the rear shield constructed as a telescopic member with the telescopic parts moved apart by a further actuator cylinder.
