Prodn. of isoimidylpthalic acid anhydrides of formula (I): (where A is a 2-8C divalent organic gp). comprises (a) reacting a salt of 3- or 4-aminophthalic acid with an anhydride of formula (II) to give a salt of amidylphthalic acid (III), (b) converting the salt into the acid and (c) cyclising the acid by condensn. to give the cpd. (I).(I) are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins for use as moulding materials, impregnating agents, coatings and adhesives.
