The clutch of an automobile transmission system has a driving plate (18) which transmits the drive through a number of compression springs (20B) to a driven plate (12) which is attached to the hub (10). This arrangement of springs (20B) permits a degree of differential angular movement between the driving plate and driven plate, which can give rise to torsional oscillation. In order to limit these oscillations, a friction washer (25) and a spring washer (27) are fitted between the outer plate (13) and the driven plate around the hub. The hysteresis due to the friction damps out the torsional oscillations. An additional source of hysteresis is provided by friction pads (30) attached to the outer plate (13) by bolts having heads sliding in slots in the driven plate (12).
