The control device is arranged on a new type of crosshead between the bottom section (4) and cover (5) of which the bottom end of the piston rod (2), ending in a ball head (1) is pivotably mounted. This permits a rotation of the working piston of the internal combustion engine relative to its cylinder. In the course of its swivel movement the pushrod (3) drives a control element, which turns the piston rod (2) and hence the working piston by way of the slewing ring (12), which is pivotably arranged on the ball head (1), and a transmission element (11), which is connected to the slewing ring (12) and the ball head (1), in intermittent adjusting movements.
