The optical detector is for conveyor systems carrying crown-topped bottles and is designed to reduce error due to wobbling movement. Supported on a frame (7) overhanging the conveyor (1) and at right-angles to it, are sets of twin reflection-type optical detectors (5). One detector is aligned above each row of containers, e.g. bottles so that an emitted light beam is reflected back by the crown closure (8) on the bottle top. The point of impact of the twin beams is offset from the geometric centre of the line of travel of the bottle so that, despite wobbling, a secure reading is always obtained. Alternatively, a single beam may be used and the detector head oscillated from side to side in a direction at right-angles to the line of travel.
