Typing unit enables a vertical line to be typed by operating a special key which activates a type with a vertical linear printing surface. Operation of the key causes the platen to be rotated step by step with each key stroke without the platen moving along. The key (1) is connected to a rod (2) linked to the type lever (3). Simultaneously the platen is rotated by a further rod (4) having an L-shaped end which engages with the crosspiece (5) of a U-shaped limb whose arms are attached to the ends of the platen's rotational axle. The one arm has a catch (6) which engages with teeth (7) on the end of the platen to effect the required rotation.
