The handbrake operating mechanism is esp. for traction vehicle trailers. The handbrake lever can be mounted on the trailer, e.g. on the two-bar linkage. Alternatively it can be a displaceable lever retained by a plug and socket arrangement leading from the trailer to the traction vehicle. In either case, the lever is coupled to the trailer brakes via a tension member. One end of the latter engages a retainer-capable of its own motion in the braking direction - on the handbrake lever. The retainer is releasably connected to a second tension member on the handbrake lever in the direction of braking. This second tension member engages a second handbrake lever at the driver's position.
