Detector 1 may be coupled to the output of a gas chromatographic column by stud 4 and is provided with pipes 5, 6 to which hydrogen and oxygen are respectively supplied, terminal 7 to which the operating voltage is applied and a collector electrode 8 connected via terminal 9 to an amplifier and chart recorder Fig. 2 (not shown). The micro-reactor 2 is in the form of an electrically heated platinum wire 15 which may be in the form of one or more sections each of which is heated independently to a different temperature. After cooling by fins 18 the combustion products pass to detector 3 which includes a (3-radiation source 19 and collector electrode 21, the latter being via cable 22 to an amplifier and the same chart recorder as the flame ionization detector 1. By choosing the temperature of the reactor correctly the apparatus can discriminate between various elements. Thus for detecting sulphur and nitrogen the temperature of the reactor is in the range 100 to 800‹C, for Sulphur 500 to 600‹C preferably 550‹C and for nitrogen 400 to 500‹C preferably 400 to 450‹C. The apparatus may also be used for detecting phosphorus, halogens, arsenic, silicon, lead in organic compounds.
