The face seal for the rotating shaft (2) consists of a collar (1) pressed against the stationary ring (4) by a number of springs (45). The face (6) of the collar (1) is provided with a groove (46) which extends through an arc of 53 deg.. The groove (46) is connected to the outer edge of the collar (1) by a chain of small diameter blind holes (18) connected by zig-zag grooves. Fluid introduced into the space (14) flows along the zig-zag grooves and reaches the main groove (46). The combination of zig-zag grooves and blind holes (18) creates a turbulence which increases the resistance to flow of the fluid. This enables a relatively large face clearance to be used and reduces the risk of damage by small particles of foreign matter.
