[Also in Divisions C3 and F2] Metal surfaces are coated with a curable antifriction composition comprising a mixture of: (A) one or more epoxy resins chosen from glycidic polymers obtained by reaction of epichlorohydrin with polyhydric alcohols or phenols, non glycidic polymers prepared from unsaturated polymers, glycerides or cycloaliphatic compounds; (B) powder of Pb, Bi or alloys containing these metals in an amount of 5-6% by wt. of the composition. The composition contains no other curing agents. The epoxy resin component may comprise a mixture of solid epoxy resins having M.W. 2000-4000 having terminal epoxy groups and up to 20% by wt. (of the resins) of resins without terminal epoxy groups having M.W. up to 50,000. The composition may also contain one or more curing accelerators, especially those which reduce the coefficient of friction of the composition, e.g. lead sulphide, bismuth sulphide, neutral aluminium phosphate and solid lubricating compounds derived from phosphoric acid, boric acid and an alkaline hydroxide (e.g. Specification No. 1,096,458). The composition may also contain plasticisers and surfactants. The composition may be in powder or granular form and the powder or granules may contain powder or granules of one or more sublimable organic curing agents (e.g. at 0.1-1% by wt. of the epoxy resin) such as hydroquinone, resorcinol, maleic, phthalic, pyromellitic, hexachloroendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic anhydrides, terephthalic acid or hexamethylene tetramine. Examples relate to the coating of a powder on to a metal substrate which is then heated for 3 minutes at 190‹C, followed by calendering and finally curing for 2 hours at 190‹C under nitrogen. |
