1481362 1 - Hydroxy - 2,6 - methano - 3- benzazocines SCHERING AG 24 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 32684/74 Heading C2C Compounds of Formula II in which Q<SP>1</SP> represents an optionally substituted benzoyl group, R 1 and R 2 each independently represents a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group and Z<SP>1</SP> represents a free, etherified or esterified hydroxyl group are obtained by contacting the corresponding compound of Formula III under fermentation conditions with a microorganism of the family Agaricaceae (e.g. Pellicularia filamentosa f. sp. sasakii ATCC No. 13,289). The hydroxylation is preferably effected at pH 5-7 and at 20-40‹ C. An amount of III within the range of from approximately 50 to 1000 mg. per litre of nutrient medium is favoured and approximately 1 litre of air is preferably supplied per minute per litre of nutrient medium. The example prepares the metabolite, (Œ)- 1,2,3,4,5,6 - hexahydro - 1(#), 8 - dihydroxy- 6(α), 11(α) - dimethyl - 2,6 - methano - 3- benzoyl-benzazocine.
