1478784 Static mixers SOLVAY & CIE 3 March 1975 [4 March 1974] 8679/75 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions B5 and H5] An apparatus for heating polar polymers has a microwave generator 2, a tubular waveguide 1 through which a polar polymer is passed to be heated by microwaves, a means 5 for feeding polymer to the waveguide, a means 3, 4, for forcing the polymer through the waveguide and within the waveguide, at least one static malaxating device 7, 8 for keeping the polymer homogenous. The malaxating devices 7, 8 are helicoidal planar bodies extending diametrically across a circular tubular waveguide, alternate ones being right or left handed. Alternate devices have their adjacent edges at right angles. So that microwaves can propagate past, a rightangled triangular insert extending from the leading and trailing edges of alternative malaxating devices to split the polarised wave into two compartments of planes of polarisation of +90‹ and -90‹. Alternatively, deflectors to rotate the plane of polarisation through 90‹ may be provided between malaxators. Perforated plates 6, 13 reflect the microwaves at both ends of the guide and permit the polymer to pass. A malaxating screw may be situated between downstream reflector 13 and die 12 to degas the polymer, to ensure an homogenous product and to provide additional energy to force the polymer through the die. |
