Release and lubricating agents for rubber processing - based on ethylene oxide condensates of (12-18 C) fatty alcohols

(Mould) release agents for (un)vulcanised synthetic or natural rubbers comprises an adduct of 2-100, esp. 4-20 mols ethylene oxide (EO) with an 8-22C, esp. 12-18C fatty alcohol. The release agent system may also contain adducts of EO with alkylphenols and opt. 20-45 pts. wt. (per 100 pts. wt. EO adducts) of a polyalkylene glycol, esp polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a mol. wt. of 200-2000, and 10-45 pts. wt. (per 100 pts. wt. EO adduct) or a low polyfunctional alcohol such as glycerine. The release agent can be used with natural rubber, butyl rubber, EPDM, polychloroprene, butadiene-styrene, etc., and give good release and lubricant properties without affecting the physical-mechanical properties of the vulcanisate or the vulcanisation behaviour. They do not cause corrosion or contamination of metal mandrels, etc. and are esp. useful e.g. in prodn. of extruded pipes and elbows which are vulcanised on a mandrel, giving higher output and requiring less force to move the product on the mandrel.
