The apparatus is used in a full-width washing machine for web-shaped material, which works continuously on the counterflow principle and which is made steam-tight. A slit-shaped orifice (51) is provided in a lower region of a steam-tight washing compartment of the machine for the entry of the material and for the exit of the washing liquid. This orifice (51) is sealed off relative to the outside in a siphon-like manner by dividing the end wall of the compartment into a lower part (45) forming an overflow edge (25) and into an upper part (34) extending within this edge (25) and lower than the latter. V-shaped pockets (38) are formed at both ends of the slit-shaped orifice (51) by means of the lower part (40) and of a metal plate (39) in each case projecting obliquely upwards from this compartment end wall above the lower edge of the upper part (34). These pockets (38) are partially closed off relative to the middle of the compartment by wall plates (43) and upwards by panels (46) arranged between the lower (40) and the upper (34) part of the compartment end wall. Provided in the lower part (40) are orifices (45), through which liquid can run off from the pockets (38). <IMAGE>
