Hardening of saw teeth - by selective heat treatment with control of base temp.

The saw is pretreated so that the main part of the saw tooth is held at a definite prescribed low temp. During or after the transfer of the tooth in an atmosphere at a definite low temp. the surface layer is heated. On completion of the heating period, the layer loses its heat to the main part of the saw at the low temp. The saw may be moved intermittently or continuously through the heat treatment equipment and temp. control methods may include the use of air or water. By control of the saw temp. the efficiency of the selective hardening process can be assured, independent of changes, e.g. seasonal, in the ambient temp.
