Prodn. of dichloronicoting acid and its derivs. of formula (I) comprises heating corresp. nitriles (I; COOH replaced by CN) in conc. H2SO4 (R = H or 1-5C alkyl; R1 = H, CH3 or C2H5. Pref. the acid is 90-102, esp. 94-98% H2SO4 and reaction is at 140-190, esp. 160-170 degrees C. Pref. R = CH3 and R1 = H, and reaction is for about 10 hr.
