The invention comprises pyrrolidone and piperidone substituted silanes and siloxanes, the silanes having the general formula <FORM:1097453/C3/1> where n=2 or 3, Q is an alkyl radical containing less than 7 carbon atoms or an H atom, R is a divalent radical free from aliphatic unsaturation which is a hydrocarbon radical or a radical containing carbon, hydrogen and one or more oxygen atoms in an ether linkage, x=0 or 1 and R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, a hydrolysable group or a hydroxyl radical; and the siloxanes containing at least one unit of general formula <FORM:1097453/C3/2> where Q, R, R1, n and x are as defined above and m is 0, 1 or 2, any other units present being of the general formula <FORM:1097453/C3/3> where Z is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical and a is 1, 2 or 3. The silanes may be prepared by reacting <FORM:1097453/C3/4> with HSiR13 in the presence of a platinum catalyst, e.g. chloroplatinic acid and in the presence of a suitable solvent, e.g. xylene and a vinyl polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone. The siloxanes are prepared (1) by hydrolysing and condensing the hydrolysable silanes or (2) by reacting <FORM:1097453/C3/5> with a siloxane which contains silicon-bonded hydrogen. Examples disclose R11CH2CH2Si (CH3)(OC2H5)2, [R11CH2CH2Si(CH3)2]2O, R11 CH2CH2Si(CH3)2OSi(CH3)2Ph, R11CH2CH2Si (CH3)2OSi(CH3)2C18H3, and a homopolymer containing <FORM:1097453/C3/6> units where R11= <FORM:1097453/C3/7> |
