<p>Metal strip at the end of a coiling operator is cooled by directing a cold water spray through a slot of non-uniform cross section, widest at its centre, between the layers of strip being coiled. Protrusions are formed along the edges of the strip being coiled, just prior to this being done so as to make the strip coil in layers with gaps between the strip to permit free access for the cooling water. The spray is directed radially into the coil as it is being wound.</p> |
