Container bridges used hitherto for container handling facilities are big and complicated structures and require long load-cycle times. In order to obtain smaller facilities and quicker handling, a four-bar luffing system is arranged on a framework which can move along the quay and is provided with an intermediate storage table for receiving containers. The four-bar luffing system merely serves to transport the containers between the ship and the intermediate storage table. The latter lies above the vertical clearance for container vehicles and can have several storage planes. Provided for the movement of the containers between the shore-side container store or the container vehicles and the intermediate storage table is a further transport system with a crab track projecting towards the container store and a travelling crab on the framework.
