Porous silica-alumina microspheres are obtd. by (a) adding Na2O to aq. Na silicate in an amt. substantially in excess of that required to form water glass; (b) adding mineral acid to ppt. hydrous silica; (c) adding an aluminate salt to ppt. hydrous alumina on the silica; and (d) filtering, purifying and drying. Pref. Na2O source is NaOH or Na2CO3. Initial excess alkali renders the product extrudable to yield strong, unseable extrudates and also increases the prod. pore size.
