An internally plasticized alkyd resin is obtained by condensing a previously prepared monoester of a polycarboxylic acid or polyesterforming derivative thereof and a C 5-10 straightchain alkanol with at least one polyol and optionally a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, the mixture containing at least one reactant having more than two ester-forming groups. Suitable acids and starting materials for the monoester are listed. A vegetable fatty acid or oil may be added. In examples, the monohexyl ester of tetrapropenyl succinic acid is condensed with trimethylolpropane and phthalic anhydride, and the monohexyl ester of trimellitic anhydride is condensed with linseed oil fatty acid and trimethylolpropane. The products are used to prepare paints and enamels, e.g. with aminoplast resins. |
