PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a near field light optical head device which is small in size, light in weight and has a large degree of freedom in designing. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a high refractive index medium 12 made of a light incident plane 12a, first and second inside surface reflection surfaces 12b and 12c and a light-emitting surface 12d. Light beams irradiated from a light source 15 are made incident on the medium 12 from the surface 12a, reflected only once at the surfaces 12b and 12c, respectively, converged on the surface 12d and seep out as near field light beams N. The gap between a recording layer 3 of a recording medium 1 and the surface 12d is set to be less than 1/4 of the wavelength of the light beams and the seeped out near field light beams N irradiate the layer 3 and form recording pits 3a. |
