<p>Employs X-rays, a converter for producing electrical signals relating to the transmission of the X-rays through a cell containing a suspension of the particles in a liquid, and a signal processing and recording system. The particles may be e.g. of kaolin clay in an aqueous suspension, with the cell containing the suspension disposed between a source of X-rays and an X-ray detector all disposed along a horizontal axis with the X-ray radiation passing through the cell being continuously measured as the vertical position of the cell is varied relative to the beam of X-rays. The operation of the apparatus is based on Stoke's law of sedimentation, and from the measurements of the transmission of the X-rays at different levels both the size of the particles and their distribution in the suspension may be determined.</p> |
