[Also in Divisions B3 and B8] In a method of attaching bails to containers a bail blank is mounted on the container and a portion of it is pressed to a non-circular crosssection having a major dimension in the plane of the bail. The preferred materials are carbon steel, aluminium or stainless steel, or plastics materials such as polyethylene, nylon or polystyrene. The pressing is performed in dies 75, 76, mounted on platens 72, 73, having chamfered edges at 79, 80 to produce crimps 65, 69, Fig. 3, the exterior angle of the crimp with the unpressed part of the bail being less than 90 degrees in order to turn parts 28, 29 of the bail inwards so that it firmly engages dimples 26 and 27 in the container. When pressing plastics materials the dies may be heated. Specification 1,179,628 is referred to. |
