PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress response delay until a valve lift amount reaches a required amount upon starting, thereby improving starting capability. SOLUTION: In a control device for a variable valve lift mechanism capable of continuously varying the valve lift amount of an engine valve by using an electric motor, while an ignition switch is turned off and an engine is rotated, the target valve lift amount vTGVEL is set to be an engine starting time valve lift amount mTGVELINT larger than the minimum valve lift amount. By outputting an operation signal for controlling to the target valve lift amount vTGVEL to the electric motor, the actual valve lift amount upon engine starting is set to the engine starting time valve lift amount mTGVELINT.
