An electrical component, e.g. a tantalum solid electrolytic capacitor, suitable for mounting on a printed circuit board comprises a cap 18 within which the body of the component is mounted on metal supports 9, 15 insulated from each other, the supports each having a connecting tab portion connected to lead portions of the component, e.g. by soldering at 17, 16 and the cap being filled with plastics material leaving portions of the metal supports to provide leads for the component. As shown in Fig. 4, a method suitable for multiple production comprises laying the capacitor bodies with their cathode coating 7 on tongues 15 of metal strip 9 and their anode leads in grooves 13, soldering the cathode and anode leads to strip 9 as in Fig. 6, covering the capacitor bodies with caps 18, inverting the assembly, filling each cap with plastics material and when this has set, severing the strip at the edges of the caps (Fig. 5, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown), metal strip 9 is replaced by a plastics strip (21) with two metal strips (23), (24) along its lower longitudinal edges, the metal strips having tabs (12<SP>1</SP>), (14<SP>1</SP>) extending through slots in the plastics strip. Strip 9 may alternatively be severed at a distance from the edges of the caps to give capacitors with laterally extending leads (Fig. 10, not shown) and these may be bent at right angles to give plug-in capacitors (Fig. 12, not shown).</p> |
