PURPOSE:To efficiently form a coating consisting of an amorphous material on an optical fiber in desired thickness by passing an optical fiber drawn from a preform through a reaction tube, supplying a coating forming material into the reaction tube in the form of mist, and heating the fiber in the reaction tube. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber preform 6 is introduced into a drawing furnace 7, and drawn to form an optical fiber 3 which is introduced into the reaction tube 8. The coating material (e.g., benzene) in a raw material tank 10 is simultaneously atomized by an atomizer 11 into mist. The mist is introduced into the reaction tube 8 along with a carrier gas (e.g., N2), heated by a heating means 9, and pyrolyzed therein to cause a reaction shown by the formula, for example. As a result, a coating of the amorphous material consisting essentially of carbon is formed on the optical fiber 3. The thickness of the coating can be controlled, as desired, by controlling the drawing rate of the optical fiber 3, the amt. of coating material to be supplied, etc. |
