PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free piston-type stirling cycle engine which is inexpensive, has a small outer diameter as the whole engine and has high efficiency. SOLUTION: The free piston-type stirling cycle refrigerator as a free piston-type stirling cycle engine comprises a cylinder 7, a piston 18 that can be reciprocated within the cylinder 7, and an electromagnetically driving mechanism 19 as an electromagnetic mechanism that reciprocates the piston 18. The electromagnetically driving mechanism 19 comprises a moving part 20 and a stator 35. The moving part 20 comprises a permanent magnet 24 disposed outside an inner yoke 23 formed of a permeable material. The moving part 20 and the piston 18 are disposed in an axial direction, and the stator 35 and the cylinder 7 are disposed in an axial direction, whereby the outer diameter Rm of the moving part 20 in the electromagnetically driving mechanism 19 can be reduced. Thus, the inner diameter Rs and the outer diameter of the stator 35 provided outside the moving part 20 and, in its turn, the outer diameter of the whole stirling cycle refrigerator can be reduced.
