A cold generation process acting by compression of a mixture of various refrigerating materials, in which part of the mixture is condensed in the compressor after-cooler, then separated, passed through a heat exchanger and returned to the suction of the compressor, is carried out as follows: the gaseous components of the mixture leaving the after-cooler are subjected to further cooling and condensate separation, then expanded to do work; after receiving heat again they are recycled to the compressor; the liquid fractions separated in the condensor and second cooler are expanded through throttles to low pressure and then rejoin the gas flow to the suction side of the compressor.
