The sorbent is (1) Al oxide, doped during mfr. with cations or anions which can be incorporated in the crystal lattice and retard the crystallisation of the gamma-Al2O3 phase or (2) an Al2O3 treated with salt(s) of such ions on the surface after mfr., e.g. in DT 27 26 192, the Al2O3 used is doped with 0.05-2.5 wt.% CO2. In an example, 5 1 aq. soln. contg. 1 kg Al nitrate were slowly adjusted to pH 9 with NH4OH soln. and, at the same time, COi was introduced for 6 hrs. The filtered and washed hydroxide gel was activated by calcining for 12-24 hrs. at 500 degrees C. For Al2O3 doped with 0.13 (O) wt.% CO2, using 0.5 g sorbent + 100 ml. NaH2PO4 soln. contg. 200/80 mg P/l, the % elimination was 50.7 (41.25/90.3 (65.25) and the loading 2.03 (1.65)/1.44 (1.04)% P.
