A device for compressing crop so that air is substantially expelled comprises a compressing channel 146 and a ram 147 of rectangular cross-section provided at the corners with rollers 151 and on its face with a rotatable disc 149. The ram is reciprocated by a crank assembly 156. Crop is fed into the compressing device by worm conveyer 124 through opening 145, cutters 125, 126 being provided to facilitate reciprocation of the ram. The ram has a circular recess accommodating a disc 149 with orthogonal strengthening ridges 152A. It is made fast on a threaded spindle 153 which is engaged in a screw-threaded part 157 secured to the wall of the compressing channel. As the ram is reciprocated by arms 156, the spindle 153 and disc 149 are forced to revolve. Bent catches 158 are designed to engage the crop on the forward stroke and to be withdrawn from it during the return movement. |
