PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an azo compound represented by formula (3) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>represent each an alkyl group or the like; and R<SP>3</SP>represents a carboxy group or the like) in better yield. SOLUTION: The method for production is carried out as follows. The corresponding diazonium compound is added to an acid addition salt of the corresponding aniline compound or a mixture of the aniline compound with the acid addition salt and reacted therewith.
