A deformable skirting system for a ground effect machine comprises a flexible sheet of fluid tight material forming a continuous closed surface, said sheet being joined to a flexible reticulated structure 8 formed of an interwoven mesh of wires, cables, filaments or the like. The mesh 8, shown for clarity in only the central regions of Fig. 1, may be made of metal, glass, textile or other wires, and the fluid-tight sheet, of rubber or plastics, may have the mesh embedded within it, or coat one surface of the mesh, or be joined to the mesh solely at the lower edge of the mesh, 6. The mesh may be in the form of wires wound around the skirt to form oppositely inclined helices, or constructed from rhombus shaped elements joined at their corners by ties; the wires make an angleαwith the horizontal and the skirt is constructed so that tan<SP>2</SP>α#0À5, i.e. so thatα#35À4 degrees, which results in a decrease of the volume of the air cushion contained by the skirting system when the load on the machine is increased, and improves the dynamic stability of the machine. |
