The present invention relates to a two-stroke internal combustion engine. The cylinder 1 of the said internal combustion engine has, in the bottom dead centre region of the piston 5, radial and tangential scavenging ports 6, 7 which, distributed over the periphery of the cylinder, are placed with their transverse outlet section in a common row. The result is that longitudinal scavenging of the cylinder is improved, whilst a zone under the exhaust valve 3 which is not usually scavenged, is also reached.
