The invention relates to a compact tube bundle system made up from elements comprising a central tube surrounded by 'active' tubes, each in contact with the other, and each element having a common liquid inlet and liquid outlet. The basis of the design is an element consisting of a central tube closely surrounded by one or two layers of 'active tubes' arranged in hexagonal formation, all disposed vertically. The central tube is closed at both ends and above it is the liquid inlet for that element. Used for heat transfer and matter transfer processes, including chemical reactions, involving direct contact between gas and liquid phases. As compared with packed columns, or columns having tube bundles with tubes attached to tube sheets, the new design offers a compact and inexpensive construction, low pressure drop on the gas side and good contact between the two phases.
