<p>Mixt. of a carbonaceous material (I) (esp. coal) and a non-carbonaceous material (II) (esp. ash) is enriched in (I) by: (i) dispersing the mixt. in a suspension liq. pref. water; (ii) adding to the suspension obtd. a hydrocarbon agglomerating liq. that is lyophobic towards (II) and lyophilic towards (I); (iii) stirring to give agglomerates largely of (I), contg. less than 12 wt.% ash; (iv) sepg. the agglomerates from the mixt.; and (v) size-reducing the agglomerates. The process is s3useful for reducing the ash content of low-quality coals, coal washery waste, fine coke from the gas scrubber of a coking plant, etc. The prod. is an improved feedstock for combustion, gasification or liquefaction, requiring less investment in pollution control.</p> |
