Cross beam for an instrument panel and method of making the same

The method involves placing an air duct (5) made of plastic between metallic shells (6, 7) that are welded with each other. The air duct connects an air inlet (8) with an air outlet (9). A cooling medium e.g. carbon dioxide gas, is discharged into a metallic profile section (3) via openings in the front side of the profile section during welding of the metallic shells and ejected outside the air duct. An independent claim is also included for an instrument panel carrier.
