The invention relates to a process for the treatment of sludge and a device intended for application of the process. Sludge appears alongside white liquor in the causticizing process in a sulphate cellulose plant and the aim of the treatment is to separate, wash and dry the sludge for calcination. According to the invention, the sludge treatment is realized by means of a filter which rotates about its axis, such as a drum filter, by using suction to form on the filtering surface 2 of the filter 1, from a mixture 6 of sludge and white liquor, a sludge cake 7, by washing the cake with a detergent solution conducted through the latter and the filtering surface, by drying the cake with air conducted through the latter and the filtering surface and by removing the cake from the filter. For the formation of the sludge cake, the filter is preferably partially submerged in a basin 5 containing sludge and white liquor and, for washing and drying of the cake, is partially surrounded by a casing 8, to which the feed ducts 10 for the detergent solution and the drying air are connected. <IMAGE>
