Element (4) for operating a manipulating arm which replaces a master arm the movements of which are converted into corresponding movements of the slave arm. The operating element (4) comprises motors (36 and 42) and encoders (36' and 42') driven by a computer so as to entrain shaft portions (23) which clip into the rest of the arm. The system can be used above all for work requiring accurate displacements in terms of position and/or in terms of speed of the slave arm or for carrying out work of a repetitive nature. <IMAGE>
